Common Processing Methods for Zircon Sand

41 13.Sep.2026 KZ Editor

Zircon sand is a key raw material for high-end ceramics, refractory materials, the nuclear industry and precision casting. It is predominantly found in coastal sand deposits and weathered residual sand deposits, and is often associated with minerals such as ilmenite, rutile, monazite and quartz. The processing of zircon sand primarily relies on physical separation, utilising differences in mineral density, magnetic properties and electrical properties to achieve step-by-step purification. The process flow is well-established and highly environmentally friendly, making it a typical example of sand ore beneficiation.

The first stage in zircon sand processing is washing to remove silt and classification. As the raw ore contains a high proportion of silt and numerous impurities, fine silt and lightweight gangue are removed through washing, screening and hydraulic classification, thereby initially increasing the proportion of useful minerals and creating the conditions for subsequent concentration. The roughing stage generally employs gravity separation processes; utilising the high density of zircon sand, pre-enrichment is achieved via spiral chutes and shaking tables, discarding the majority of low-density waste rock.

The coarse concentrate from the gravity separation stage proceeds to the fine concentration stage, where a combined magnetic and electrostatic separation process is employed for purification. Magnetic impurities such as ilmenite and magnetite are progressively removed through strong and weak magnetic separation; utilising the differences in electrical conductivity between zircon sand, rutile and monazite, electrostatic separation is used to further separate impure minerals, significantly enhancing the purity of the zircon sand. For applications requiring high-purity sand, a flotation process may be incorporated to remove trace silicate impurities.

The entire zircon sand processing system relies primarily on physical separation methods, resulting in minimal chemical consumption and low pollution levels, making it suitable for large-scale continuous production. Through the standard process of ‘ore washing and classification – gravity concentration – magnetic and electrostatic separation’, high-grade zircon sand can be produced in bulk, fully meeting the standards for high-end industrial applications.
